Outstanding individuals at Deutsche Bank
In its 150-year history, over 100 outstanding individuals were at the head of Deutsche Bank and the bank it merged with in 1929, Disconto-Gesellschaft. Some of them came from families of the financial elite; others had worked their way up from modest circumstances to the highest positions in the bank. Many of them spent their entire working life - which could be up to 60 years - at the bank; for others it was just a step along the way, for example, to a position in government. Most of them had a traditional banking career behind them, but there were many who came from other fields.
The first of Deutsche Bank's Spokesmen was Georg von Siemens (1870-1900), followed by Rudolph von Koch (1901-1909), Arthur von Gwinner (1910-1919), Paul Mankiewitz (1919-1923), Oscar Wassermann (1923-1933), Georg Solmssen (1933), Eduard Mosler (1934-1939), Karl Kimmich (1940-1942) and Oswald Rösler (1943-1945). After the re-unification of Deutsche Bank in 1957, Hermann-Josef Abs filled the Spokesman's office until 1967.
He was followed by Karl Klasen and Franz Heinrich Ulrich - it was the first time in the bank's history that it had two Spokesmen of the Board of Managing Directors at the same time.
After Klasen had been appointed Bundesbank President in 1969, Franz Heinrich Ulrich continued to hold the office alone until 1976. He was followed by F. Wilhelm Christians and Wilfried Guth; once again, two Spokesmen. Alfred Herrhausen performed the Spokesman's duties from 1985 until 1989 - until May 1988 together with F. Wilhelm Christians.
After Herrhausen's assassination on November 30, 1989, Hilmar Kopper became Spokesman of the Board of Managing Directors of Deutsche Bank. He was followed from 1997 until 2002 by Rolf-E. Breuer. On May 22, 2002, Josef Ackermann took office as the Spokesman of the Board of Managing Directors. This was the first time a Swiss was appointed to lead the bank.
